I have a 1954 Cadillac Limo that has developed a problem with the electrical system. The lights flash/flicker and I can hear a cliking sound under the dash on the left side. I can feel this clicking by touching the headlight switch and the automatic headlight dimmer on top of the dash. Can someone help me diagnose the problem?    Robert Ingram

There is a thermostatic breaker in the headlight switch itself. As you can feel it in the switch I would assume it is tripping, resetting and tripping again. There is a heavy load somewhere in the system. I am not sure if disconnecting the autoauto dimmer is as simple as unplugging the box but if it is I would start there. Then check all grounds on the bulbs and clean all connections.

If no short can be found sometimes it is just the age and condition of the thermostatic breaker that Jeff mentions. If they have suffered damp corrosion in the past and become thin they will trip much more easily.

To Jeff:   I have spoken to some old mechanics here in La Grange, Texas and 2 of them mentioned a ralay on these lights, so maybe they mean thermostatic breaker. It looks like a difficult job getting that switch out of there, I can't get my hand under the dash in that area.    And Steve, a short in the system has been discussed . I think it will be like finding a needle in a haystack with all the wires on this Imperial Sedan. You are invited to my place to help in the search.     Robert Ingram

Strangely enough, Robert, the electrics are one of my favorite jobs of a restoration next to the upholstery. I have for 30 years built all my own looms and many for other people.  There's great satisfaction connecting things up with new wire and watching the lights come on etc.  Sadly a little far away from you though ;D
