Just use a paint pen.  My understanding is they weren't painted from the factory and instead this is a common thing collectors do to "dress" their car up.  My 55 has it and I'm thinking about removing it and bringing it back to blue.

1953 or 1954 was the last year for the painted, if I recall correctly.

I don't have the patience to use a paint pen, so I bought the decal set & installed on a spare pair of covers....looks like a decal....
I talked to a pinstriper @ a car show. I will be removing the pair on the engine & have him give it a try.
