Hydramatic rebuild issues

Hello all.

I have a 52 cdv which came to me with a 1950 trans. It had an abrupt 2-3 shift so i found a more correct '54 trans and a pro rebuilt it.

Been a fiasco but to get to the point, there's a slight hydraulic issue

Ive adjusted the tv rod per th book, and then some.

When car is cold, it hahgs onto 4 th gear too long before downshifting. Around a corner i have to hit the gas to get it into 3 rd.

Then when stopping it shutters like being in 4h and slowing down without the clutch till it finally downshifts.

Doesn't seem to to that if i use the other range that has only 3 gears.

Ive had vavle body out like 4 times andit seems clean but I didn't go through the valves because I didn't want to get in over my head. Been laying on my back to replace the broken throttle shaft  it had.

When cae warms up the shuttering improves a bit.

Thinking mayve governor?

Not sure how to check a governor once i do get it out.

Any Advice appreciated.

Thanks

I have a 55 Cad with a 54 engine using the 55 trans. I had tons of issues with the trans not shifting correctly and come to find out that in the valve body box on the TV rod arm, the valve rod that goes into the trans was detached from the rod that the TV rod slightly moves to control the shifting valve. I had to pull the valve body cover off and throw a weld on it to re-connect the TV rod unit to it. I guess this was pretty common with the spot weld to break and good luck finding a new one. If you can freely rotate the TV rod coming out of the transmission then the spot weld in there broke and you will need to throw another weld on it but make sure it is lined up correctly. To this day my trans shifts a little hard from 2nd to 3rd which I hear is common, and needs to almost come to a crawl in 2nd for it to downshift. It works great but from what everyone else says these transmissions have their issues.

There is a post out there from me with photos and details that has to do with fixing the broken TV rod valve issue.

Here is that TV rod post I put on there. Let me know if you have any questions. I am by no means a transmission expert, just someone who likes to try and act like one lol.

Hi Adam,

thanks for the link - I actually took a shaft from the old trans but intend to weld up the broken one - I m sure those rookies broke trying to bend the TV rod at the carb while it was still attached to the trans.

Coincidentally - it was your post that gave me the nerve to try it myself, so thanks!

another strange thing i forgot to mention 52-54 trans is supposed to be the same, but the old 1950 trans had the band adjusters line up with floor boards acces hole.  and now this 54, which is supposed to correct, doesn't  align -  cant get the tool on the front band.

I am to the point where I am considering re packing the clutch plates on the 1950 trans to alleviate the harsh 2-3 shift and putting it back in the car, which will have been such a waste of $ and effort on this 54....

cheers
