1950s Transmission Leak and Ambient Temperature

A week or so ago, I drove my 58 SDV on a morning where the temperature was in the 20s.  My usual very-livable transmission leak (from the front) became much worse (multiple drops per second), leaving a couple of puddles and a train of drops in the driveway in a very short time.  The leak remained even after the car was warmed up. 

Wondering if the cold temperature had something to do with it, I drove the car again today, with the temperature about 50 degrees and it was back to its normal self.

Do you have any insights why it was suddenly worse one time, then back to where it was before?  The "before" has been happening for many years.
