I have Hagerty, and have for many years. When when my '59 Fleetwood caught fire on the freeway, I had to find out the hard way that they are good. Paid to get everything back the way it was or better w/no hassles.

Hagerty quoted me $250 a year for restoration insurance, and $600 a year for a $40,000 agreed value policy unlimited mileage policy for my 61.

Tell us more about the fire and getting your car totally repaired.

When was this.

How involved was the car on fire.

What were the cost estimates of the damage repair.

Unless it's a fire in the ash tray, most insurance companies immediately declare the car to be a Total Loss, and pay out after you haggle the value, less the deductible.

Hagerty guaranteed value!  I have all 3 GMs covered by them with their Drivers Club package which allows for unlimited towing from 100 miles away.  Only costs about 1k a year.

If you had an engine fire, please share photos.  Took about 600 dollars worth of parts and two full days on a weekend to fix mine, but she turned out fine.  The only thing that concerns me over time is some of the crispy wiring I might have missed...but so far so good.

It happened on April Fools Day, 2007. One of those tubular glass in-line fuel filters came apart, and gas went all sorts of places it shouldn't, including the generator. As I was getting off the freeway hoping to make it home I thought it was a tune up issue or stuck choke until somebody yelled that there were flames shooting out under the car. Pulled over and got the hood open and fire out. IIRC it was about $9k to replace everything, including all soft parts and wiring under the hood and some dash wiring, along with repainting the hood. I'll try and dig up some pictures. I know there are some pics around somewhere.

I'm coming up on thirty five years with Hagerty. I wouldn't even consider insuring a classic with anyone else, regardless of rates.

Good morning DAvid,

You make a great argument for not using those tubular or plastic fuel filters in the engine bay. I have a '39 LaSalle and a '41 Cad. Both came with plastic filters in the engine compartment. The Cads' is on the line from the fuel pump right at the top of where the line crosses over to the carb, in the middle of the fans' airflow above the manifold.

THe car will be down for a couple of weeks. One of the projects is installing a metal filter in the back near the tank.

THe LaSalles' was mounted on the fuel line just before the line made the ninety into the carb. I relocated the filter to the rear as soon as I got the car. THose engines  generate a lot of under hood heat from the exhaust manifolds even in the temperate climate of coastal northern California.   

THe small inline filters that were the pattern in metal for the plastic ones are available and they work fine in that application.
