The bumpers are the same for 48 and 49, not 50.

I think the part you describe as the "valence" is called a "gravel deflector" by Cadillac.  According to my 1935-55 Parts Manual, they are unique to 1948, part number 1451817. 49 is different.

Try Desert Valley Auto Parts in Arizona or John Gately in Massachusetts, gatelyrestoration.com or Dennis Akerman in New Hampshire.

I second the idea of rebuilding original parts and only replacing the bad parts. Demand is small for our parts so not a lot of actual manufacturers. It doesn't matter what name is on the box. Four bad fuel pumps,(Carter and Airtex) a leaky master cylinder and stuck wheel cylinder taught me. My rebuilt brake booster, generator and fuel pump have all worked fine for a number of seasons.

My '58 Series 62 convertible was was built in the last two weeks of production.  It only has AM radio and whitewalls.  The last few weeks of production was called "buildout".  Many times we would receive cars very different from the way they were ordered.  But to have a convertible without at least tinted glass was very unusual

Quote from: TJ Hopland on Yesterday at 01:28:13 PMI'm pretty sure this is the transmission that is basically 2 2 speeds stuck together so that 2-3 shift is the shift when both sections have to shift so timing gets involved since its not a single element.  Its like 1st is LO LO, 2nd is HI LO,  3rd is LO HI (so both sections had to shift) then 4th is HI HI.

It's exactly that way.

The article forgot to say that a fluid coupler is more efficient when the RPMs between pump and turbine are near identical and that the H-M is transmitting the power part mechanical and part via hydraulic.
On the other side, the H-M was a complex construction and expensive to manufacture.

Another thing I think we were all taught that I think has changed now is as long as you were in there to replace them all or the other side too.  Now days if you do that you are likely removing a perfectly good part and replacing it with something not as good so the better plan now would be to just replace the broken one.

I just watched about half of "Alex Cross." (One of my favorite book characters to read.) The movie was set in Detroit, had modern Escalades up the kazoo, bad guy drives a sexy CTS coupe, they used "On Star" to track him, and had one scene in the GM museum with several old Cadillacs AND the Y-Job that I pressed a fingernail to once. But they even had a guy sitting in it. Shades of Harley Earl, indeed.

(My apologies if this has been reviewed before. It's late and I want to go to bed, so I didn't scroll through all four pages of comments.)

Quote from: Dan LeBlanc on Yesterday at 05:44:48 PMI'd say you're getting pretty respectable vent temps using hydrocarbon refrigerant. I've heard they can fall on their face stuck in traffic though.

Has that been your experience, ir has it been good?

Not enough "real world" driving to comment on any positives or shortcomings. Having worked with propane and isobutane (the components of Envirosafe) on a daily basis for the past 29 years, I don't expect any problems. If it "falls on its face" it won't be because of the refrigerant. It flashes off through the TXV just like R12 or R134a but does so at lower pressures.
