Gas Problem

Best to pull it out of there and inspect.
If ends dished and/or cam will have scars you got problems.   Can easily measure length. 
Are you sure pump was put back correctly?   
Most after work problems aren't due to wear.   Like they didn't seat the actuator arm on the shaft.   It has to be in correct position.   It was probably living on syphon, until you changed grade.

  Ron, the fuel push rod length is 3.1225" long x .370 diameter.
I had problems starting my engine after a complete rebuild and finally tracked it down to the carb.
I had it rebuilt by a well known company in Detroit, it was their first rebuild on a '32-'33 carb and
they used mine as a prototype to build and sell new carb kits for these years.
After much frustration I was able to determine that they had made the float slightly oversized and
it was impeding the gas flow into the carb. It (the float) was sanded down slightly and has performed perfectly
since.
So, if you had your carb rebuilt or installed one of these carb kits check that the float isn't interfering
with the jet.
