I would like to take the lock out so I can blast and paint. I would believe there is a simple "trick". I just don't see it. Will the magician out there reveal the secret? 60 Cadillac glove box.

Try using the trunk key, they are usually the same key so you can leave your car with an attendant or in  a shop and they can not get to your secure contents.

There is a procedure in the Shop Manual.  I remember something about inserting a paper clip in the #1 lock cylinder hole with the key in the lock.  It's supposed to realease the internal pawl and you pull the lock cylinder out using the key.  Then you unscrew the escutcheon.

I had a hell of a time with my '57.  I did finally get it but it took several attempts.

Hi,

Push te lock cylinder all to way to bottom and you'll see the hexagon shape in the bezel. Now find something similar like bolt with correct size head and turn the bezel open. There's a few threads in the cylinder. Voilá- there's your lock disassembled.

Brian,  If you are just trying to remove the entire lock assembly and it is in the unlocked position push the button and the locking pawl will retract and you should be able to remove it from the glovebox door. I just did that on my '41 which appears to be the same style. Good Luck,

Here is a link to the procedure someone described in detail. I also posted a link to a company that sells the hexagon shaped tool to remove the bezel. They also sell several other bezel and escutcheon tools and grill bullet tools. Good luck with your project. Brian.

Soak thread in penetrating oil overnight , sometimes you can be lucky and crack the tread by hand just jiggling the rear side of the lock back and forth and holding the front bezel tight in your fingers.
