I recently rewired my dash and most of the car.  I am having trouble with the turn signals/brakes and the Temp gauge.
When I turn the key on, the gauge doesn't move. (Gas gauge does).  I have 6 volts at the sending unit. If I ground the sending unit wire, the gauge pegs at full hot, so the wiring and gauge work.  The sender reads 250 ohms and it doesn't change even when the engine is hot.

So.... I need a sender.  The only 6 volt ones I can find are $120 or so.  Not going to happen. I figure I can use a 12 volt sender (Did I just say 12 volts?! :-X   ;D ), but I will need to know the Ohms range of the original sender.  I can figure it out by substituting resistors, but I am hoping someone here has the silver bullet I need to finish this job.  Anyone have the specs on the original sensor ohms?

Thanks

Many GM cars used the same TS-1 senders. There is one for sale on Ebay for Olds/Pontiac 1939-1952 for $40. Do not forget... do not wrap tape or sealant around the threads.

I read 171 ohms across my sender (disconnected from the circuit).  Six volts.

If I'm not mistaken all GM cars used the same 6 volt water temperature sending unit from the late '30s until they went to 12 volts in the '50s.  For example, the unit on my '49 Cad came from a 6 cylinder '47 Olds motor.  Try junk yards like Arizona Vintage Parts or Desert Valley Auto Parts in AZ.  If they have one I think it would be less than $120.  Joe Cutler at 49caddymanemail addresses not permitted might have one too.
