At the recent grand nationals in Las Vegas my 1958 Cadillac Series 62 was entered in the primary judging class.

Towards the end of the judging of my car the senior judge in the group approached me to address what he described as my car as having one "authenticity" problem.

He stated that although he was not an expert on 1958 cars another judge in the group was and had stated I was missing an asbestos wrap/gasket on one side of a down pipe leading from the exhaust manifold. I do have the spiralled metal covering installed as described in the authenticity manual.  There is nothing mentioned in the CLC authenticity manual about an asbestos warp that is in addition to the spiral metal covers mentioned.

Do you think I should have received a deduction when I followed the authenticity manual and the asbestos warp is not noted? Anyone know exactly where this asbestos goes and where to purchase some of it?

Thanks for any info.

The wrap goes just below the the heat riser , see attached picture , from memory it is just over 11".
I have used a few products to replicate this & so far none have been successful enough , modern products that are used to wrap turbo chargers become fragile & brittle when hard & start falling to bits.
I am currently looking at making a mould to make the wrap but the problem I have is that the pipe on every car would not have the exact same curve , so I am looking at using a softer product as the first layer which may eliminate this problem .I made correct clamps a while ago I am going to trial one on my 1960 Daily Driver when I replace the exhaust soon.

So does this system apply to the 57 as well?  Looks like flex pipe....

John, your pic is different as your parts book was published in 1960 , mine was taken from a parts book published late 1958.
second question 57 & 58 are different see attached pic , the flex pipe is a cover over the pipe not the pipe its self.

John as enthralled as I am about this exhaust wrap on that gorgeous 58 of yours, what I really want to know is have you found the piece you need for the Eldorado ?  :D

John that process sounds incredible. Would you mind sharing the details?  Photo of part.....cost for 3D imaging....cost for 3D printing? Etc?  This will clearly be the "future" for many hobbyists as time goes by for smaller unobtainable parts.

Old thread but does anyone still make the repros for this?  If I'm doing my exhaust I'd like to make it 100% correct.
