Having searched around here, I can't seem to find the straightforward information I am looking for. What is the part number for ignition points on my 39 LaSalle?

I have seen Delco D-104P points recommended, except their configuration is incorrect for my distributor (Delco 1110604). Fact is, most of the information I have turned up here seems to be oriented to those who have, or are presumed to have a 1940+ distributor with a vacuum advance mounted on their 39s which I am guessing is why I can't peg down the exact part number I need.

I have attached a photo of my distributor as I received it, and which complies to the period literature as well as the authenticity manual, so I am confident that is the correct distributor. Note that the breaker point is to the left of the post, rather than to the right as would be required of the D-104P style.

I could just go to one of the vendors, tell them what I need, and get new, generic, made in China jobs. But honestly I'd prefer to track down some NOS ones to have on hand. Thanks

I shared this in another post recently.......so you are going down the right path. I haven't had the time to research a new set but will be replacing them when I find the right set.

A problem I just recently encountered was with a new set of points.  The spring force was too light.  This was for my flathead '39 LaSalle engine.  I ordered points from NAPA and noticed the spring pressure was a lot lighter than my original set.  I installed them, set gap but couldn't get the engine to start....it would only fire once or twice.  I had done a total tune up so I started with the basics of voltage at the coil and continuity through the point set.  I wasn't getting continuity from the coil through the points.  I verified the issue was at the point contacts and no where else....just a little extra pressure on the contacts and I would get continuity.  I thought maybe they were dirty so I cleaned them....still intermittent.  So I thought maybe there was some type of coating on them so I ran some 400 grit paper between them.  It helped, but still intermittent.

I replaced a lot of point sets in my life but never had this problem! I'm thinking: "Really?? Two metal contacts that open and close. They can't not work".  I rechecked the gap, pulled them out and reinstalled them but could not get them to work....just too light of spring pressure. I ended up filing and polishing my old set for now and running them.  In the engine specifications there is a specific call out for spring force on those points and it is pretty high on this engine.  May not be your problem but I thought I would mention it.

:D. Actually,  your post was my inspiration for putting this out there. I was going to tag it onto the other thread but figured it might get lost.  :D

Thanks for looking that up Jay. I hadn't thought about looking in my MPL.

I did however look into a Delco-Remy parts catalog from 1948 which I have access to, that lists the part number as 1871869. Plugging that in to the Delco-Remy part finder website shows the 1871869 number as being obsolete and superseded by 1925852. In turn, they list the 1925852 number as being obsolete as well.

After a lot more digging, I was able to turn this list up which supposedly are parts interchanges. It's a bit overwhelming and seems to be a mix of currently available parts and some vintage ones. I can't state positively that these are all correct, but some of the numbers I pulled up show points which "appear" to be the correct ones. Hoping this may help others (and myself).

USNtar,

Check with Bob Hoffman on this forum. He may have what you need.  I've bought points for my 40 LaSalle from him.

Thanks Bob, that is good info to know for future reference, but fortunately the previous owner included a set of spare points. I just don't know what brand or model as they came in an unmarked bag with no original box or anything. Figured it might me good data for me to sort out for future reference.

This car never ceases to amaze me with it's mix and match of parts which often don't seem to conform to what the supposed "factory stock" parts are claimed to be. Of course you never know whether it was a previous owner who made some of these changes, or if it came from the factory trying to use up old stock. I have a late production year car with matching engine, but it seems to have a 1938? distributor, a 1940 air cleaner cover, a 1940 style oil filler neck with the separate, curved breather neck; the list goes on and on...certainly keeps it interesting.
