30s-40s Shackle Bushing Replacement

As my rebuild of the front suspension winds down to completion, I am turning my attention to other projects. One thing that has always bothered me is the squeaking and creaking that my car has ever since I got it. At first I had thought it was in the driver front area, but investigation showed it was actually in the lower shackle bushing on the passenger side. Amazing how those sounds can telegraph through the car and give the illusion of being somewhere else. Anyway, contrary to factory warnings, I discovered that a quick shot of WD-40 every once in a while eliminates the problem completely. No squeaks or creaks of any kind...until the WD-40 gives out and I have to reapply.

But, I would prefer to fix the problem rather than put a band aid on it. Overall I understand how to replace the bushings and so forth, but what I really need to find out is if this is something that can be done with the springs still on the car? Can I wedge the springs, or support them with a jack while I remove the bushing bolt(s) and replace the rubber? Or does the whole leaf spring assembly need to come out in order to replace them? If the latter is the case, I will probably leave well enough alone for now until such time as I get around to doing the whole rear suspension. Thanks.

My '49 had the same problem with noise some years ago.  I had new springs and bushings installed by a shop that specializes in springs and drivelines here in the Atlanta area where I live.  Problem cured.  Although I have worked on rear leaf springs in the past, I prefer having it done professionally, as I feel there is an element of danger involved and some special equipment may be needed.
