Was a gas cap with ‘bailing handle’ ever original equipment?

If so, what years?

The reason I ask is that on my ‘51, it would seem to be easier to access the cap under taillight if it had the handle on it.

I had seen one on an old 52 or 53 and wondered if it was stock.

The reason I bring it up is the ‘49 Series 75 Limo in the For Sale section has one according to the photographs in the CL ad.

Yes, the bale cap was a factory thing.  I know it was so on 49 and for a while after (but I don't know when it stopped).

Thanks Art, I wonder why they are so scarce now? Or would think there would be a bunch around...

Jim,

If this is the style you are referring you can get them from almost any of the Chevrolet vendors they should be in the neighborhood of around $12 but you will need the vented one.

Good luck..!

My 47 has ‘rabbit ears’ on the cap! No doubt OEM

Some were replaced with locking gas caps.  Some got lost.  Some were replaced with generic caps when the gaskets failed.  Over the years, most of them have been replaced with non-original units.  You don't see many of them these days.

I believe the version with the wire bale was used from 1948 to 1958.  Here is what they look like...

Again, thanks for posting the picture, as I was trying to figure out what a "Bailing Handle" looked like, especially on a Gas Cap.
