Hi guys,

I'm bringing a '49 convertible back to life and am conflicted over the rear fender wells. They were patched before I got the car, and we're concerned that any body fill/fiberglass over this will crack when fitting the fenders. I'm not after a concours car, but the gaps seem so severe that welting won't cover the seams.

Does anyone have any leads to a junked 48/49 2dr that may have good rear quarters that we can use? Not sure how much metal parts like this will cost, but I know the fabrication time to do these from scratch is not optimistic.

Thanks!
Mike

This is a really complicated structure in this area.  If you look from the inside you will see another complete structure that forms a water bucket for the rain water that comes down by the quarter window.  If it is not there more problems.  If you can find someone with a parts car that will let you cut this quarter out, whatever it cost will be the cheapest part of this repair.  Sorry, don't have a lead on a parts car.

Thanks Brad, thats helpful to know when navigating this. This motivates me to go back to leaving the "sins" in the fender well and focusing all fabrication efforts to cleaning up the edge along the fender seam. It seems like anything deeper will require all out war with this body.
