I have a question regarding the innards of the washer bottle and what pumps the fluid. I have the vacuum diagram for my series 61. The system was in pieces and the washer bottle was missing. I believe I have the correct bottle. Unfortunately it only has a diaphragm on top of the bottle. There is no visible means to pump fluid. Am I missing something? What is inside the bottle? Any one got a picture or know what’s in there?

Ron,
Hi. If you can wait, I'll go out in the shop in the a.m. and snap some pictures for you if that helps. I'm almost positive that the '47 bottle is unique and one year only. Something to do with the base. I waited over 10 years to find the correct one, and Thanks to Bob Hoffmann, he hooked me up with a beautiful original complete set-up....

Just looked up part #s and they used the same washer system from 40 to 49. I overhauled a washer unit that I obtained from a wrecker for my 49 S62 which should be the same. I made a quick sketch of a cut a way and basic operation.
The diaphragm is pulled up against a spring when the washer button is pushed on the dash. This draws fluid up past a check valve in the fitting at the base of the diaphragm. When the button is released the vacuum is removed and the spring pushes the diaphragm back to it's rest position which will also push any fluids that have made it past the check valve out of the outlet towards the sprayers or nozzles at the base of the wiper arms. It can take several cycling's of the button to draw up and push out the fluid to the nozzles.
Hope this helps. I have quite a few photos of the washer and bottle in various stages of disassembly if you need.

Ross, not many people would admire a washer bottle but yours is pristine and beautiful. Thanks very much. The good news is I have the correct washer bottle, the bad news is it's missing all the brass bits. The diagram and the pics should give me all I need. It's such a simple system, prime and squirt. I was confused how vacuum could push fluid in a constant stream without a pump. Fact is it doesn't. Thanks again. Ron.

Hi Ron,
Some of the connectors are really just a Y and T joint an whole lot of vacuum tubing. You make be able to get some of the parts in the Help section at local parts store (also the vacuum tubing). Or for just the brass fitting head over to the plumbing section of a Home Ddepot and T fitting.
Or get ones from Chevy type reproduction parts shops, like Chevy of the 40's. The other route is to find a pre 55's Trico vacuum washer kit to get all the parts at once.
The push button comes up on ebay from time to time at about 60.00 but the main thing is to make sure it has the L-bracket to mount. But that also can easily be made.

The main thing is testing to see if the diaphragm in the top part has failed, the rubber deteriorates over time and can cause the whole not to work.

Also the bracket and clamp are particular to the 40's style, there should be a ring that goes around the bottle and latches to the the main bracket.

See reference pics. Note this is not my setup, just one that sold on ebay a while back.

I found a couple of proper diagrams on the workings of the vacuum diaphragm pump and vacuum tubing layout. These came from a Jaguar club site so that may be an avenue if your looking for TRICO hardware. By the looks of Abe's photo's the 47 had a different mounting bracket than the 49.
Here's some part #s

Washer Pump = 143 4470
Bottle [squarish] = 145 3549
Clamp or Bail [1940-47] = 143 4468
Mounting Bracket[1940-47] 143 4467

I have seen both styles on some cars I know for sure the one I posted is 41 style.  Even then the top of the pump is the later 40’s style.  But it seems that some people may have added their washer or it could have been added later from the original owner.  The part may be different . Depend if you are going to original. Or just trying to use what you got.

Hello ,   The style from the E bay photos is correct For 1946 series 61's and I believe 47 as well.  I have studied this for some time and still need that square bottle that doesn't thread on to the bracket.  Hope this helps.  Tim

Could anyone provide me w/ as exact dimensions as possible of the square glass bottle (particularly from the tip of the rim at the top to the bottom) for a 1947, preferably from someone who is certain their setup is right? Extra points if you have the measurement of the pickup tube once it's unscrewed from the vacuum portion. Think I've finally got a complete setup, but the square glass bottle I have I think is for a '48 because the pickup tube hits the bottom of the glass jar when I put it on AND the screw at the bottom of the bail fully extended doesn't quite squeeze the bottle in tight enough. Close, but not right. Happy to post pictures or answer questions if it's helpful.

Thank you!
