Because the cruise control on my friend's Eldorado was inoperative, i did some investigating. When turned on and set for cruise, it would give back pressure on the accelerator all the time, regardless of the setting on the dial and at any speed between 30 and 80. After consulting the shop manual i did all the electrical checks which were all good. I took the cover of the motor unit and discovered that turning the dial on the dash did not seem to have any effect on the spring that provides a variable pressure to the governer. I removed the dash unit after disconnecting the control cable at the motor unit.
I then discovered the culprit of the problem. The white plastic tab that holds the control cable is broken. In the drawing you can see it (there is a small line from the control cable to where it connects to the housing assembly.
I think it is a weak design, but they probably did not take into account that the plastic would get brittle after 50 years and break. As it is an assembly, I don't think I can repair this. Unfortunately.
