Does anyone know what this red box is for on the firewall?
Its not factory.

Can you see what type of wiring goes into it. I had a gold box under my hood that we determined was some type of signal transmitter for a garage door opener.

Maybe it has something to do with the altered HVAC controls in the car. Possibly an aftermarket voltage regulator?

That is a huge red flag to me.
Looks like an electrical update that will probably prove to be very problematic.
I'd get as many details as you can, along with a schematic if you can.
If it was done by someone who knew what they were doing it may be ok. But that is a concern and possible sign of other electrical "fixes."

But why is my question? The alternator is still externally regulated. It doesn't look like a factory A/C set up to me so it may have a lot to do with it.

Just another one that an in person inspection is mandated.

What was the original setup on a 65?  Was it like the 70's where they were using the starter as the junction point?   Did the alternator output end up there or a pigtail on the battery terminal?

It would seem a little odd that someone would add that junction if they were not adding anything else.   Better pics would help to see what was hooked to it.  Can those that know these cars tell from those photos if that is factory AC?

I owned a 65 about 20 years ago. The A/C looks correct to me. The only thing that doesn't look factory are the AC hoses, either they couldn't find proper hoses or the condenser is updated, among other possibilities that are hard to tell without more pictures or inspection.

The condenser is a parallel flow condenser and there isn't even a heater box on the firewall. Granted I know almost nothing about a '65, but it seems to me there should be an A/C set up of some sorts under the hood. It just looks like a flat firewall.

Actually, if you can blow up the picture, you can see there's a line going from the compressor to the firewall, the one with the black capped service valve, and the other line from the compressor goes to the condenser, with a 3rd line going from condenser to firewall.
It must have had problems with the original A/C and was converted to aftermarket, or didn't have A/C to begin with and aftermarket air was added.

An aftermarket/added AC would seem like a good reason to do some electric upgrades and add that junction block.  It kinda looks like the correct style external reg alternator to me but I know that over the years there have been companies that have supposedly been able to upgrade the innards of stock units to increase the output while more or less looking and fitting like stock so maybe that happened here?
