You folks answered my question on the electric auxiliary fuel pump on the 57 I just purchased. Thanks!
Now on the mechanical pump. As I correct this, on the 57 does the glass bowl face up or down? I'm attempting to post a photo of how it is now with multiple brass fittings and the bowl lying sideways.

I cannot answer for your 57. I know this changed over time.

But here is a picture of the set up on 61. For AC cars they put a vapor return line on top. So the glass goes down.

Please please please do not use rubber lines on the pressurized side of the pump!  That's asking for an engine fire.  I nearly lost my 59 because of a rubber hose failure.  if possible try and bend some hard line and replace that hose ASAP.

Yes - I've ordered the metal lines

Photo of the engine in the 1957 shop manual on page 9-1 shows the filter bowl facing up.

I've seen the 57s with them installed both ways. Some facing up, some down, and sometimes with the filter removed altogether where they just ran a line from the pump to the filter. If you want to be "correct", go by the shop manual where it is facing up.
