I just read an old post about the TCC code, Torque converter control OFF.

1, THe trans does not need to be R&R'ed nor overhauled. THere is an an electric solenoid on the drivers side inside the transmission. It is not an easy job to replace it. Four plus hours IIRC. THe switch OEM costs around $40, less for the CHinese variety.

2. If you have the transmission back flushed by a quick lube, that may well create a problem. Don't do it. GM Ford, Chrysler and the foreign breeds DO NOT recommend it, nor do the other OEMS and tha OEM's don't like additives. Because there are several electric controllers in the trans even a small amount of dirt can plug the orifices in the switch. THat is why it is essential the oil should be changed at 30K +/- miles. MaNy of the quick stops and probably shops aren't diligent cleaning the machines and if the car ahead of yours had dirty oil and the machine wasn't cleaned properly you get dirt from residual dirty oil in it, even if only a little into your trans. If you had yours done and no harm was done, go and buy a lottery ticket.

3. Resist the temptation even when the attractive girl or amped up twenty year old is dogmatic about its necessity, remembering most are on commission and sales of additives and operations are a big part of their income. Show them what your owners manual says.Same for oil change intervals.

4. So,how do I know about this? We have a 2000 DeVille with 127K miles on it and I drive an '02 Eldo with 69K on it, Both have had the TTC switches replaced. It's not a new problem, my '85 Seville needed the switch replaced in '89 0r thereabout.  My sweeties DeVille  once and the Eldo twice, the second time on warranty as they used an aftermarket switch. I bought an OEM, which they installed and tossed the chinese switch. All were done without removing the transmission nor replacing the torque converter as one shop  wanted to do with the Eldo, because his afterscan diagnosis printout (third party verification) says so.  And... the second time when the light came on I scanned it, got the TCC code. My scantool won't reset the code so I took it to a shopand and they reset it. Libht stayed out for a few months. Got it reset and it came back a couple of days later.

5, Can I drive the car with a stuck switch without doing any harm? I did until I got tired of looking at the CEL and was thinking that the annunciator lights told of other more serious problems, so I had it repaired. My sweetie wants whatever is causing the light to come on to get fixed..... now, a good idea overall. I get to drive our pickup for a few days.

With the switch stuck off the only consequence is reduced fuel mileage and, if you live in California, it won't smog. You will know if it gets stuck on, believe me. It's been a problem for years,my as I said my '85 SeVille, while gutless was sure stylish and comfortable. My '82 Eldo got to 195k without  having a TTC problem, go figure. Vaguray of the automotive gods, I guess.
