What is the difference between the 40 & earlier lifter plungers & the 41 & later ones. Will they interchange??
Thanks, Bob

There is a nice illustration of both types and some dimensions.

The difference is in the body length of the larger diameter part of the plunger.

       1936-40 is 1 7/64 inches
       1941-early 48 is 59/64 inches

The body part that the plunger fits in also different

1936-40  is 1 3/32 inches long for the counterbore for the plunger
       1941-early48  is 29/32 inches"  "   "    "          "    "   "

The parts books are clear you can't mix them. They are not clear if you use both plunger and body whether the unit will interchange.

My understanding is the complete lifer assembly will interchange for all years but the individual components will not. I used a complete set of third generation lifters for the late '48s in a '39 LaSalle which worked fine.    Harry

Does that mean using the early bodies to go with the early plungers?

That is exactly what that means, Bob. The early bodies must be used with the early plungers.

There were three types of lifters used from 1936-48. I'll call them types 1-2-3.From what Harry did we know they interchange as sets.

Type 1 1936-40  Plunger and body separate

type 2  1941- early1948  Plunger and body separate

type 3  late 1948   Unit type   plunger and body one piece

The plunger/body types are counterbored to different depths,so they must match. To work.
