I have a Cadillac engine with #1485238 cast on the right rear of the block just in front of the transmission. I dont know anything about the engine.  What do these numbers mean (code)?

I just looked at http://swapmeet.ca/codes/cadillac.html TARGET=_blank>http://swapmeet.ca/codes/cadillac.html and dont see it there.

Can you give us more infomation about what year it might have come out of or things like front or rear distro?

Ifd its a 36-48 block, the engine number would be metal-stamped on the crankcase behind the LH cylinder bank, parallel to the edge of thew casting where the bell housing meets it. If its a 42 and later block, there is an extension of the RH cylinder deck just above the water pump where the engine number was metal stamped. The engine number was never cast in the block.

I believe you read the number wrong. In a rebuiders book they list casting # 1486238 ,but not 1485238. this casting was used for 1968-69 cadillac 472 engines. It also lists it for 71-74 500 engines. The 68-69 listing only has this number. THe later listing includes the casting number for 70-71 472s as well. My guess is they were useing the older casting because it was earier to get. Note;472 nad 500 are the same bore with different cranks. Warren
