1977 Eldorado "Majorica" Custom

Does anyone know or have any information on "Majorica" special edition Eldorados built in at least 1977.  I have found one and it is a very interesting custom.  The quarter windows are filled in yet it does not have a vinyl roof covering.  It also has large, solid panel T-Tops like on an early-mid 1970s Corvette.

I am told that 30-40 of these were built by the Coach Design Group of California, the builders of the Seville San Remo coupe and convertibles of the 1977-1979 vintage.  I am also told that most were sold in the Southern CA/Phoenix areas.

Are the T-Tops power retractible into the rear  roof section?  ASC (American Sunroof Corp) built a few with power retractible T-tops.  I never heard them called Majorica though.

Hi,

No these are solid, body color panels that conform to the shape of the roof, like on an early 1970s Corvette.  There is a locking storage compartment for them in the trunk.

   The power T Tops you are thinking of Tim, slide into the center T bar, not the rear section of the roof.. ASC built one 77 Toronado called the "XSR" with these tops.. A year later in 78, after Olds dropped the idea, ASC put these tops on several Eldorados, I think it was 3 before the idea was dropped altogether. I have that one Toronado XSR and a friend of mine had one of the T top Eldorados.

78 CC Biarritz in AZ (?)
78 White in CA (Haravrd Borad)
78 White in Joe Bortz collection on ebay last year (needed work)
78 Black in CA on ebay last year (needed work)
78 Red in IL on ebay last year and in Yanns database although it does not indicate it had power T-Top (looked good).

Hi,
 I have one of the Majorica T tops, sold new at Bud Brooks Cadillac in Phoenix. I talked to the former manager, Tom (I forget his last name) and he recalled the specific car as did Mr. Brooks in a phone conversation. There is almost no info out there on the net on these cars, what I found was on a site dedicated to the San Remos (the same company did indeed build these cars). They are certainly very well built, much nicer than the American Sunroof cars in my opinion.  My car is in good rust free running driving condition, but the interior is dirty and sun damaged, I would be willing to sell it if anyone is interested

Majorica T tops are manual and ASC are electric?  How can you compare a manual to a limited run electric version?

Easy, the manual tops wont break down, whereas the electric ones will.

I once owned a 72 Eldo with the power sun roof, and the slider diecast mechanism broke on one side.   Couldnt get a replacement, so it became a useless option, that couldnt be properly closed.

  I would rather have an ASC set up that did not work than this "Majorica" custom.. There is nothing to compare.. If the power T top idea stuck around, it very well could have changed some automotive history.  As the owner of that one Toronado XSR, I for one am glad the idea was dropped.

"Majorica"  Is this a mis-spelling of the Spanish Island of "Mallorca" (pronouncd MA-JOR-KA or MA-YOR-KA) ??

Has anyone seen the name "Majorica" in print, other than in this thread ?  Does the car itself carry a "Majorica" nameplate ?

ASC built a large number (relatively speaking) of NON POWER T-tops.  Compared side by side (as I have done) I think that they look cheaply made and are aesthetically unappealing. The T top panels look like they came out of a Camero.  The Power T-tops ARE quite scarce, the T-top is by necessity, small so that it can retract into the center support. You have a MUCH more open feeling driving the Majorica T-top ( which with a run of 30-40 cars is also a limited run), but you do have a much rarer car with the power T-top car. That is how I could compare them.

I have seen this car...and knew it was built by "Coach Design Group" later builders of the San Remos. I have owned two Seville San Remos and have collected original company letters with text and prices on the earlier Majorica models. The spelling is correct as Majorica and is engraved as such on each of the upper outer door moldings. The quality of their work is very good compared to other conversions of the era.
