Yep, theyre leaking.

First, Im having trouble finding replacement gaskets for the 429cu.  What are the best replacement gaskets and where can I find them?

Second, about the valve covers themselves, if Im not concerned about originality, am I better off getting new covers?  Or will a good set of gaskets solve the problem?

Porter 21919

Napa has the gaskets, the covers get warped from over-torqueing, you need to hammer them flat.

The factory paint is always shot, best to strip them down and repaint.

Whatever you do decide to do, dont get Chrome covers.

If you do, then you will never be able to stop them leaking.

When installing valve covers, I always smear a thin coating of RVT on both sides of the gasket and they never leak.

If I am boing to be constantly removing them to adjust the rocker arms for tune-up purposes, then I only RVT the one face, and then apply a thin smear of grease on the other side.

But, as Porter advises, always check the straightness of the covers and straighten where necessary.

Bruce! darn you , we should share the secret that the Chrome covers add to the HP.
Oh darn, I didnt mean to let out the secret. Oh-well, now its out, may as well buy some chrome stock.

Hi-

AutoZone and Advance/Kragen also have them.  According to their online parts guides, the Felpro part # is VS13333C, and are $15.99 at AutoZone, and $22.99 at Kragen.

Hope this helps,

Gday Jim,

The reason that Show Cars are all glitter and chrome is from the old saying, "If it dont go, chrome it", and we all know that ALL show-winning cars dont go.  That is why they invented stretchers.

If you want to make horsepower, paint the whole engine Matt Black.

This way, the internal heat will disapate faster than any other colour, and allow the engine to operate at its own optimum temperature.

That is why one doesnt see many race cars with chrome everywhere, just plain aluminium, preferably ribbed, and everything else black.

P.S.   Oops, sorry about letting out more speed secrets.

I was at AutoZone last night but they couldnt bring up a specific engine (I have the 429).

Murrays only showed gaskets for the 472.

One more thing, Im trying to stay away from cork...

Bruce Reynolds # 18992

Gday Gary,

Nothing wrong with cork gaskets.

Actually, the cork gaskets seal far better than the neoprene gaskets when it comes to rocker covers and sump gaskets I have found, especially with the tin covers.   The cork compresses far easier and will conform to an uneven surface far better than the neoprene ones.

Hi, Gary-

The AutoZone and Partsamerica online part lookups list the 429 and this gasket set.  I also checked Rockauto.com as a third source, and they reference the same Felpro number, so I think youre set (albeit set with cork).

Interestingly, the Autozone website states it is not available as special order at the store, which may explain why they could not look it up in the store.  It is available as a web order from them.

Im not sure what part of the country you live in, but you should be able to take this to Advance Auto Parts or Kragen and have them order it.  Be sure to look it up online at partsamerca.com and print out the results, so they will match the online price at the store (usually a few dollars less).

Bret
