My bodyman promises me my car will finally be done this summer. It is a triple black 66 Eldorado and I am keeping it original as possible. He is recommending a modern two part base with clear coat paint. What should I do? Also do I need the original Cadillac black color or is a black just black and I can use any old black? I can hardly tell navy blue from black so Im not going to notice but again Im striving for originality.

BC/CC urethane paint has excellent longevity and has a very glossy shine. Single stage urethane will have a bit less of a shine, which might look a little more like the original paint would have. SS urethane might be a little less expensive, but will still far outlast the enamel or lacquer paints.

I would go with the original color of black for the car, especially if youre striving for originality. There are different shades of black. Some blacks will have a bit of blue to them when seen in the sun. Black will also show even the tiniest flaw in prep work. Black is a lot more particular about prep work than other colors.

Ive told you about all I know. Porter, you want to jump in here and elaborate? Im mainly just bringing this to the top.

I just painted my 63 convertible 2 years ago, and used BC/CC.  I asked the same question at the auto paint supplier, and he said they dont have a specific code for blacks used for specific year, but have a code they used for manufacturer and general year group.  The shade on my car has no noticable hue to it-it is very black.  Here is a link to my photo album if you care to see it...

I can attest to the difference in black shades, though, from a 97 Bonneville I had that was a collision repair.  The rear half of the car (original) had a very black or dark hue (blue if anything).  But the repaired front was a very yellow/red shade.  It didnt show up much at all in the sun, but if you put another cars headlights on it at night, it was very apparent.

Hi, Brad-

One other thought... if you are an eBay shopper, they often have the original paint chip sets available with color codes, so that your paint shop can mix the right formula.  Heres a search link (below).
