What is the fluid used in the shocks for a 39 LaSalle.  Is it regular hydraulic fluid or a special fluid?

Just filled up the knee action shocks on my car with Motorcycle Fork Oil.  I forget who recommended it to me but it seems to work good.

Ive always used hydraulic jack oil. Good stuff, too.

Have a very old can of jack oil. On the label, it witten "Hydraulic Jack oil (and knee action shock absorber)"

Would these units be similar to the Chev/Pontiac units of the same era? They have an odd arrangement where the coil spring and shock absorber is in one unit (on my Chev, anyhow), and the whole lot pivots on the king pins on the end of a solid-mounted axle. I thought these were exclusively chev/ponty but Lasalle being GM may be the same. Ive been looking for a suitable fluid too.
