General Discussion / 1949 starter help needed
Last post by limo Jason - Today at 03:09:19 PM
I have a 1949 Series 75 and I'm having some electrical issues with the starting system.  The car is still 6 volts.  In the past it was changed to use two 6 volt batteries with a series parallel switch so it would crank better.  It works well and I really have no desire to change it.  Every now and then when I would push the starter button the starter would just go "Click" and nothing else would happen.  Usually the next try it would start as normal.  Lately its been getting worse. I almost got stranded at a car show last weekend and today I had the same issue.  I think my neutral switch is ok. Am I having issues with the relay?  Is the starter going out?  what do you all think?  1949 is a one year only starter I believe so I would like to trouble shoot a but before I start throwing money at things that don't need replaced. Thanks

It is more complicated than just model. 1957's are all by themselves. In 56 and 57 ,Cadillac used 2 suppliers .Complete springs interchange ,but types A&B have different profiles and ends.
Most 1956 models are on their own. series 75,1954-56. do interchange. 1954 and 1955 generally are the same by model except convertible models, that you need to know serial numbers to get the right one. Models with air ,use heavy duty springs.  Cadillac Group# 17.0015

My rule for used springs . Get the pair. From a heavier model in possible.

For what its worth, they can't be considering load and spring rates.
Hollander (1959 book)  Rear Spring    #11;;  2 1/2 wide x25 1/2 front bushing center   to bolt x31 bolt to rear bushing center x  1 1/8  bushings
  fits:  Cadillac 54-57 , 58-59 Coml

You can sometimes cold work an old spring. Take it all apart. Don't Heat! re-arch the leaves one by one (bend them to create  more curve). If they don't break,it will raise the car when put back together. Often short lived. My brother Ed, is still running a 1946 Chevy after 40 years and doing it twice.

If you can get a verified shape, gently massage the lines with a tubing bender until you reach the desired shape. I remember it being a real bear to replace the lines on my '59. They were held up in transit and I needed to get the engine back in.

You would still need to spray it or air brush it on to get a consistent layer on the material. But a cool idea! Cheap too.

Technical / Authenticity / 1960stransmission line shape check

I would appreciate some feedback on the shape of these transmission cooler lines.  I think they got bent in storage, but would like to confirm before I buy replacements.
All opinions welcome.  Thank you!
